You may be surprised to learn which celebrities don’t drink, for reasons other than mental illness or addiction. That’s right, they just decided for one reason or another to be sober!
We are not downplaying the courage of sober celebrities who have overcome addiction, like Robert Downey Jr., Russell Brand, Demi Lovato, and Elton John. (If you struggle with alcohol use disorder, please contact Alcoholics Anonymous or another support group.)
But with the growth of the sober curious movement, it’s more and more popular to pick up a bottle of non-alcoholic champagne. You don’t have to struggle with alcohol addiction to ditch the booze!
Let’s take a look at some of the most famous sober celebrities who don’t drink.
1. Leona Lewis
Leona Lewis is a British singer and model who won the X Factor in 2006. She is also an activist, especially for veganism and animal rights.
Lewis doesn’t drink because she doesn’t like the taste and she doesn’t need it to let loose.
“I don’t drink,” she told InStyle Magazine, “I haven’t for years. It tastes like hairspray to me. I can have a great time without alcohol… I’ll sometimes have a little Red Bull.”
2. Tyler, the Creator
Tyler Gregory Okonma, better known as “Tyler, the Creator”, is a Grammy-winning rapper and producer. Each of his unique hip hop albums has amassed more critical acclaim than the last.
Okonma does not drink, nor does he use any mind-altering substances. He has tried marijuana twice in his life, he says.
“I just don’t want to drink,” he told People Magazine. “I’ve never seen anyone drunk, like, ‘Damn, I want to be that.’ So, I guess I just naturally got it pushed into my head that I have no reason to go over there and get f**king drunk.”
3. Chrissy Teigen
Christine Diane Teigen, better known as Chrissy Teigen, is a famous model and social media personality with over 40 million followers on Instagram and Twitter combined. She is married to musician John Legend.
Teigen became the most recent of these outspoken sober celebrities when she decided to go sober in late 2020 after reading the self-help book, Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol, by Holly Whitaker.
“I was done making an a** of myself,” she revealed on her Instagram story. “…Tired of day drinking and feeling like sh** by 6, not being able to sleep."

4. Natalie Portman
Born Neta-Lee Hershlag, Natalie Portman is an Israeli-born actress and filmmaker. She was the first person born in the 1980s to win an Oscar for Best Actress for her leading role in Black Swan.
From an early point in her adult life, Portman decided to avoid alcohol and drug addiction. Though she would drink plenty in college, she has sworn off drinking since her Harvard days.
5. Bradley Cooper
Bradley Cooper is an Oscar-nominated actor and filmmaker who has won 2 Grammy Awards and a BAFTA. You may know him from The Hangover, A Star Is Born, and American Sniper. He also voices Rocket Raccoon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Cooper has remained one of the most famous sober celebrities for over 15 years. In 2012, he told the Hollywood Reporter that he quit drinking because he believed it would eventually ruin his life.
Spreading the love, Cooper even helped fellow actor Brad Pitt get sober, according to Pitt.
6. Rumer Willis
Rumer Willis is an actress and singer, the eldest daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis. She won season 20 of ABC's Dancing with the Stars.
She has said that she had an unhealthy relationship with alcohol after watching her mother Demi Moore relapse. Willis told Red Table Talk, “I think at the time I didn’t have a healthy relationship with alcohol either. When I stopped talking to my mom, then it kind of kicked up into high gear.”
As of 2021, Willis is celebrating 4 years of sobriety, despite 2020’s many challenges.

7. Shania Twain
The Queen of Country Pop was born Eilleen Regina Edwards. Now known as Shania Twain, her hits include “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!”, “Forever And For Always”, and “Any Man of Mine” (which garnered 2 Grammy nominations).
Twain abstains from alcohol for health reasons.
“I like a clean band. I don’t like drugs. I don’t like alcohol,” Twain writes in her autobiography. “I like to have clean-living people around me.”
8. Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick Lamar Duckworth is a rapper, songwriter, and producer. Lamar is regarded as one of the most influential artists of his generation, having won 13 Grammys and stamping his undeniable influence on the music of the 2010s and beyond.
Lamar is a vocal advocate for clean living — no alcohol, no drugs — perhaps related to his devout Christianity. He was baptized in 2013.
He has spoken about growing up in a family that partied regularly (read: substance abuse). Because of this experience, he never drinks or does drugs.
9. Tyra Banks
Tyra Banks is a supermodel, businesswoman, and media personality, among other achievements. Winner of 2 Daytime Emmys, Banks may be best known for creating and hosting America’s Next Top Model.
Banks said, “I've never had any drugs and I had a little taste of alcohol when I was 12-years-old, but that's about it.” Thankfully, she said, she doesn’t have an addictive personality.
She hates the taste of alcohol and hasn’t ever been drunk. However, she does like holding a glass of wine without drinking it — it makes her feel sexy.
10. Andy Murray
Sir Andrew Murray is a professional tennis player from Scotland. He has been ranked world No. 1 by the Association of Tennis Professionals and has earned $61 million in prize winnings.
At the age of 16, he says that he vomited outside a club due to alcohol, trying to catch it in his hands. That’s the only time he’s been ill from alcohol.
Murray says that he easily gave up alcohol in his later teenage years. “I always wanted to see how far I could go in the sport. I didn't want to do anything to jeopardize that.”
11. Jada Pinkett Smith
Jada Pinkett Smith is an actress, businesswoman, and wife to actor Will Smith. She has 2 children, Jaden and Willow. She is most well-known for her acting in Scream 2 and The Matrix trilogy and her voice work in the Madagascar trilogy.
Smith grew up in a “drug-infested neighborhood” and in a home with a mother who struggled with alcohol abuse.
“I found myself drinking two bottles of wine on the couch and I said, ‘Jada, I think we’ve got a problem here,’” she said in 2005. “From that day on I went cold turkey.”

12. Christina Ricci
Christina Ricci is a famous actress, known for her roles in The Addams Family (1991), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), and Speed Racer (2008).
Although her husband accused her of “boozing hard” during 2020 quarantine in their tumultuous separation battle, Ricci maintains she has been sober for more than 20 years.
She told BlackBook in 2008, “I didn't think it was very good for my life."
13. Calvin Harris
Born Adam Richard Wiles, Calvin Harris is a Scottish DJ, producer, and singer/songwriter, known for “We Found Love”, “One Kiss”, and “Feel So Close”.
Harris stopped drinking when he was 24. (He was born in 1984.)
“I wasn't an alcoholic or anything like that, but it was clearly affecting what I do," he told the BBC. "My live shows are a million times better now.”
14. Blake Lively
Blake Lively is an actress, best known for her starring role in Gossip Girl. She is married to Ryan Reynolds.
She never had any interest in alcohol. "I don't drink. I've never tried a drug," Lively told Allure in 2012. “It's just something that I genuinely don't have a desire for.”

15. Jennifer Lopez
Also known as J.Lo, Jennifer Lopez is a world-renowned singer, actress, and businesswoman now worth over $400 million.
"I think that ruins your skin," Lopez told InStyle Magazine in 2003. She may have a peer-pressured sip of alcohol at celebratory events, but she avoids the stuff otherwise.
Sir Robert Bryson Hall II is better known as Logic. He is a popular rapper, YouTuber, and Twitch streamer.
His parents struggled with alcohol and substance abuse. However, he took this as a cautionary tale.
"I don't drink. I don't smoke weed,” he said in 2013.
17. Jennifer Hudson
Jennifer Hudson, also known as J. Hud, is an acclaimed singer, actress, and activist. Since her big break as the seventh place on the third season of American Idol, she has earned an Oscar, 2 Grammys, and a Golden Globe.
Hudson has said she’s never had much of an interest in alcohol.
"I’ve never had a drink in my life," she said on Chelsea Handler’s show back in 2013 on her place among sober celebrities. “I’ve never been interested. Nobody ever believes it."

18. Pharrell Williams
Pharrell Williams is a singer, rapper, and producer known for “Happy” and featured on the hit songs “Blurred Lines” and “Get Lucky”. He’s won 13 Grammys.
Williams says of alcohol, "Everybody else can do what they want, but that stuff isn't for me."
Despite not drinking himself, Williams launched his Qream liquor brand in 2011, though it was discontinued within 2 years.
19. Gillian Jacobs
Gillian Jacobs is an actress best known for portraying Britta Perry on Community and Mickey Dobbs on the Netflix series Love.
Jacobs is a teetotaler, a choice she made at a young age. She swore she would never drink alcohol or use drugs after "watching people in my family grapple with addiction."
20. Dane Cook
Dane Cook is a stand-up comedian and film actor with some impressive records to his name.
At almost 50 years old, Cook has never had a single sip of alcohol, as he confirmed in 2019. He has implied that his father struggled with alcohol use, stating this as his inspiration to remain sober.
21. 50 Cent (Curtis Jackson)
50 Cent, born Curtis Jackson III, is a famed rapper and entrepreneur. He will be forever remembered for his impact on the hip hop industry.
Ironically, one of his most famous hits, “In Da Club,” speaks frankly about drinking Bacardi, doing X, and sipping the bubbly.
But Jackson told Piers Morgan in 2011 that he never became a drug addict, even though he dealt drugs when he was a young teenager.
“I stayed away from it,” he said of alcohol.
22. Lucy Hale
Though she was born Karen Lucille Hale, people know her better as Lucy Hale. This actress is best known for her roles on Pretty Little Liars, Scream 4, and Truth or Dare.
She said that she was drinking alcohol to try and fit in when she first got famous. Now, she has "no interest" in the Hollywood partying scene anymore.
“I think I only just figured out who I was a year ago,” Hale said in 2017.
23. Brad Paisley
Brad Paisley is a country music singer/songwriter. With 3 Grammys to his name, Paisley has also become a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
Although one of his popular songs is titled “Alcohol”, Paisley doesn’t drink alcohol of any kind. Well, he didn’t use to.
“I’m a newer drinker,” he revealed in 2020. However, he didn’t seem to drink for at least 20 years before he took up here-and-there drinking last year.
24. Sarah Silverman
Sarah Silverman is a controversial stand-up comedian and comedy writer. She’s known for her early appearances on Saturday Night Live, her writing/acting in The Sarah Silverman Program, and voiceover work Wreck-It Ralph. She has won 2 Primetime Emmy Awards.
Though she may have struggled with depression and drug use at a younger age, she doesn’t seem to have any problem abstaining from alcoholic beverages.
Silverman’s reason for not drinking alcohol: “I don’t drink because it gives me a stomachache.”
25. Gene Simmons
Gene Klein, more commonly known as Gene Simmons or by his stage persona “The Demon”, is the bassist and co-lead singer of KISS. Simmons is perhaps one of the most surprising of the sober celebrities on our list.
He revealed in 2019 that he never touched substances such as alcohol because he was an only child to a mother, a Holocaust survivor.
Simmons told the Los Angeles Times, "I was concerned I had no right to harm my mother. Life did that enough."
26. Jim Carrey
Jim Carrey is a world-famous comedian, known for works like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), Bruce Almighty, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and his brief stint on Saturday Night Live as Joe Biden in 2020.
Though he used to use various substances to cope with depression, he gave up alcohol to be more present in the here and now.
Mental health issues are a factor that Carrey attributes to his abstinence. “I'm very serious about no alcohol, no drugs. Life is too beautiful,” Carrey said.
27. Kelly Ripa
Kelly Ripa is best known for her talk show hosting alongside other heavyweights like Regis Philbin and Ryan Seacrest, as well as her long stint on All My Children.
Ripa says the decision to quit drinking all started when she decided to do a sober month with her friends. Another win for Dry January!
“I just didn’t really feel the need or desire to go back to it. It wasn’t really a choice or a thought, it was just, ‘Yeah, I guess I don’t drink anymore.’”
28. Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway is an Oscar-winning actress, known for The Princess Diaries, Les Misérables, and Alice in Wonderland.
When her son Jonathan was born, she pledged to stay away from alcohol for 18 years, feeling she couldn’t be available to him if she were hungover.
“The time I have with him is really precious,” Hathaway said on Lorraine, “and I do leave a lot for work and I found my time with him was getting impacted, not necessarily by the drinking, as I never went out of control around him.”
29. Donald Trump
You know who the Donald is — host of The Apprentice and 45th president of the United States. He's also among sober celebrities who never dealt with alcoholism.
This divisive figure in media and politics does not drink. Ever. He says it’s because he watched his brother Fred struggle with alcohol abuse.
He usually opts for Diet Coke instead.
